Ralph Waldo Emerson studied at Harvard Divinity School in 1825–1826. The Harvard Divinity School did not confer degrees before 1870.
The local Unitarian ministers' association awarded Emerson a license to preach on 10 October 1826. He accepted a call to the Second Church of Boston and was ordained on 11 March 1829. A theological degree was not yet a prerequisite for ordination or licensing to professional ministry.
